Osteoporosis The Silent Disease

The 20th October marks Osteoporosis Day, a silent disease that affects over 200 million people worldwide. Osteoporosis is the structural deterioration of bone tissue, which if left untreated can lead to brittle and fragile bones. This increases our risk of fractures and other bony injuries. As we age or bones naturally become less dense, this can be greater in some individuals based on gender, genetics, nutrition, certain medications, and activity levels. Women are generally more susceptible to the disease due to hormonal changes, particularly in postmenopausal women 50+, however, the disease can be present in males, but usually affects the older age range of 70+.

Top Tips for Maintaining Bone Density

1. Diet- ensure you consume enough calcium and Vitamin D through a healthy diet/supplements if needed

2. Sunlight- hit that sun lounger or walk in the sun. Sun exposure helps the body absorb calcium.

3. Weight-bearing exercises such as walking or taking the stairs are good for our lower legs and spine. For the upper body, weight-bearing through the arms and lifting weights can help

4. Limit alcohol intake and avoid smoking

5. Talk to your doctor. If you have concerns about your bone health, talk to your doctor, who can advise you on whether bone density screening is recommended.

How can Physiotherapy help with Osteoporosis?

Physiotherapy plays a key role in helping keep individuals active and guiding them on appropriate exercise in the management of the disease. Here at the PhysioCentre our team of physiotherapists have an in-depth knowledge of the disease and can apply this knowledge into appropriate exercises to keep your bone health strong. The implementation of strength training, in particular, weight-bearing exercises of both the upper and lower limbs and the spine can be effective in managing the condition. Physio-led pilates is a great way to maintain postural control, core strength, and stability throughout the body. The psychological impact of the disease can also affect individuals' confidence in day-to-day tasks.
